SPRING MUSIC AND ARTS EVENTS AT GRINNELL COLLEGE

GRINNELL, IA - Grinnell College’s Faulconer Gallery and the Department of Music will sponsor several upcoming events featuring faculty, student, and guest musicians, new student and faculty art, and works from the college’s art collection. All events are free and open to the public.

May 2, 4:30-6 p.m., Bucksbaum Center for the Arts Rotunda and Faulconer Gallery: Faulconer Gallery will hold an opening reception in the Bucksbaum Rotunda for the annual Student Salon and the Faculty Art Exhibition 2008, featuring works by Assistant Professor of Art Emma Zghal, Lecturer in Art Lori Raife, and Assistant Professor of Art Lydia Diemer. The Student Salon will continue through May 19, and the Faculty Art show will continue through June 1. Refreshments will be served at the reception.

May 2, 7:30 p.m., Sebring-Lewis Hall, Bucksbaum Center for the Arts: Jeanmarie Kern Chenette, lecturer in music, will lead the Harp Ensemble in a program of celtic, concert, and gothic styles. The nine student players plus six harps will perform duos, trios, and solos in the Latin, Celtic, and classical traditions.

May 3, 2 p.m., Sebring-Lewis Hall, Bucksbaum Center for the Arts: A concert by the Javanese Music and Dance Ensemble will feature traditional dance as well as two cross-cultural instrumental works by student soloists. Musical accompaniment and separate concert pieces will be performed on the College's Javanese gamelan orchestra. The ensemble is directed by Roger and Valerie Vetter.

May 4, 2 p.m., Sebring-Lewis Hall, Bucksbaum Center for the Arts: The Rose Ensemble, an acclaimed choir from the Twin Cities, will present a concert titled "Music from the Land of Three Faiths." The program will span four centuries of diverse vocal and instrumental music, "when Jews, Christians, and Muslims co-existed in Spain, Portugal, and Italy."

May 4, 7:30 p.m. in Sebring-Lewis Hall, Bucksbaum Center for the Arts: Grinnell College musicians Eric McIntyre, Patrice Ewoldt, and senior Daniel Furuta will join with guest vocalist Kimberly Fitch to perform musical treatments of poetry with voice, horn, and cello. This concert of theatrical chamber music and narrative improvisation is part of a series sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Grinnell College.

May 5, 7:45-9 p.m., Faulconer Gallery: Faulconer Gallery will host an open mic night, co-sponsored by Burling Library, for fiction, poetry and music performance in conjunction with the annual Student Salon and Faculty Exhibition. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the Grinnell community are invited to participate and listen. Refreshments will be served.

May 9, 4:15 p.m., Burling Library Print and Drawing Study Room: The opening reception for the exhibition "Disarticulated Bodies/Destabilized Meanings," curated by Faulconer Gallery intern Alanna Nissen ’09, will be held in Burling Library’s Print and Drawing Room. Nissen’s exhibit, open through May 30, features works from the college’s collection by Kiki Smith, Catherine Opie, and Adrianne Gallinari. Hours for the Print and Drawing Study Room are Sunday - Friday, 1 -5, closed Saturdays.
