COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES IN GRINNELL’S FAULCONER GALLERY

GRINNELL, IA--Grinnell College’s Faulconer Gallery will host several community events connected with the gallery’s current exhibition, "Where Are You From? Contemporary Portuguese Art," a multimedia exhibition of works by 21 Portuguese artists, on display through Apr. 20.

Mar. 29, 1-3 p.m., Bucksbaum Center for the Arts Rotunda: "Salt, Sardines, and Fairy Tales" Community Day will provide free, hands-on art activities for all ages. Participants can create their own fairy tale, using a selection of collage materials, or make paintings with watercolors and salt. Participants will also meet artists Teresa Furtado, Paula Reaes Pinto, and Antonio Pinto and learn how fishing and fairy tales are important to their art. Refreshments will be served.

Apr. 10, 7-8 p.m., Faulconer Gallery: Yoga instructor Jennifer Mavin will engage community participants in free yoga, accessible for all ages, abilities, and experience levels.

Apr. 15, 5:30-6:15 p.m., Bucksbaum Center for the Arts Rotunda: The weekly Community Meal, customarily held at Davis Elementary School, will be moved for this special event to the Bucksbaum Rotunda. The main course and beverages will be provided by Faulconer Gallery; community guests are welcome to bring a dish to share. "We are encouraging people to feel welcome to bring a dish that reflects ‘where they are from’ and celebrates our community’s diversity," said Tilly Woodward, curator of academic and community outreach. The event is organized by the college’s Center for Religion, Spirituality, and Social Justice and the Social Justice Action Group, in conjunction with Faulconer Gallery and Grinnell College Dining Services.

The Faulconer Gallery events are free and open to all members of the local community. Faulconer Gallery is located in the Bucksbaum Center for the Arts, 1108 Park St. on the Grinnell College campus. Gallery hours are Sunday-Wednesday, noon to 5 p.m. and Thursday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about these community events, contact Tilly Woodward, 641-269-4663 or woodward@grinnell.edu. -30-
