Phi Beta Kappa, a national honorary society devoted to the cultivation of the intellect and to the
union of those engaged in intellectual pursuits, was founded December 5, 1776, at the College of
William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Beta Chapter of Iowa at Grinnell College was the 70th in the nation and second in Iowa in order
of establishment. Its charter, granted by the society on September 12, 1907, was presented at
the Foundation at Organization Meetings on April 11, 1908. Since 1908, five other chapters have
been established in Iowa.
