Allison Louthan '08 (pictured) cruised to victory in the 5000-meter run to spark the Grinnell College women's track and field team at the 2008 Midwest Conference Track and Field Championships Saturday in Galesburg, Ill.
Louthan's winning clocking was 17:46.03 to beat the runner-up by nearly 25 seconds. Her efforts helped Grinnell place fifth in the team standings with 59 points. Monmouth College defended its title with 241 points.
Molly Kratz '08 placed in a pair of events Saturday, taking third in the 400 in 59.52 and seventh in the 200 in 27.51. Victoria Diedrichs '11 was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:10.14 and Liza Brost '10 placed sixth in that event in 1:12.73 while also taking fifth in the 100 hurdles in 16.77.
Leah Russell '11 placed fifth in the 800 in 2:28.72 and Frances Leslie '10 took sixth in 2:29.19. The Pioneers added a fifth-place finish in the 4x400 relay (4:09.14) and seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay (51.86).
On the men's side, David Montgomery '10 raced to third place in the men's 5000-meter run to lead the Pioneers.
Montgomery had a clocking of 15:21.45 and was less than 2 seconds out of the runner-up spot. Teammate Henry Reich '09 placed eighth in the event in 15:38.79. Their efforts helped Grinnell to fifth place in the team standings with 82 points. Monmouth won the title again with 267 points.
Kyle Lynch-Klarup '10 placed fourth in the 800 in 1:57.13, Noah DeLong '11 was fifth in 1:58.02 and Thomas Jamison '09 took seventh in 1:59.34. Nick Sparr '09 placed fourth in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:51.78 and Charlie Knuth '08 placed seventh in 10:04.44.
Winnon Brunson '10 added a sixth-place finish in the 100 in 11.52. The Pioneers were fourth in the 4x100 relay in 43.83 and fifth in the 4x400 in 3:31.10.
Final MWC Results

Louthan ran the race in 37:14.62. Another Pioneer also placed, as Rachel Whitfield '10 ran 43:07.28 to finish sixth. Anna Gilbert '09 added a fourth-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 10-6 ¾.
A number of Pioneers qualified for Saturday's finals with strong preliminary performances Friday. Victoria Diedrichs '11 qualified second in the 400 hurdles in 1:08.93 and Liza Brost '10 qualified sixth in 1:11.30. Brost was also a finalist in the 100 hurdles, as her prelim time of 16.77 ranked seventh. Molly Kratz '08 qualified for the finals in the 400, where she had the fourth-fastest prelim time of 1:00.06, and 200 where she ranked seventh in 26.92.
Grinnell is currently sixth in the team standings with 16 points. Monmouth College leads the way.
On the men's side, The Pioneers have 40 points and trail only defending champion Monmouth College entering the last day of competition.
Grinnell was sparked by a pair of runner-up finishes Friday, those by Willie Stewart '09 (pictured) in the javelin with a toss of 189-0 - which is an NCAA provisional mark - and David Montgomery in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:12.87. The Pioneers had two other runners place in that event, as well. Henry Reich '09 was third in the 10,000 in 33:27.21 and Ethan Heppner '11 was sixth in 33:50.07. In the javelin, Marquis Bradley '11 was fifth at 167-4 and Mike Hargadine '09 placed sixth at 161-10.
Noah DeLong '11 was fourth in the 1500 in 4:02.83 and Nick Sparr '09 was seventh in 4:05.28. Hargadine added a fifth-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 13-11 ¼ and Fernando Jenkins '10 was seventh at 13-5 ¼.
Winnon Brunson '10 qualified fifth for the 100 dash finals with a prelim time of 11.29.
Day 1 Results
The Grinnell College track and field teams travel to Galesburg, Ill., for the 2008 Midwest Conference Track and Field Championships hosted by Knox College.
Grinnell finished fourth in the men's division last season with 71 points, just 14 behind third-place St. Norbert College. The Pioneer women were sixth in 2007 with 68 points, but just 12 points out of being in the top five. Monmouth College won both the men's and women's titles.
The meet begins at 11 a.m. Friday with the women's hammer, while the final event of the day are the men's and women's 200-meter trials at 6 p.m. The meet resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday with the men's hammer and will finish up with the 4x400 relays at 3:25 p.m.
2008 Midwest Conference Championships
Mike Hargadine ‘09 and Marquis Bradley ‘11 each won titles to lead the Grinnell College track and field teams at the Central College Open Friday in Pella.
Hargadine was first in the men’s pole vault with a leap of 12-7 1/2, while Bradley won the men’s javelin with a toss of 167-5. Bradley led a strong Pioneer charge in the javelin, as three other throwers also finished in the top 10. They were Joey Snyder ‘10, who was second at 164-8, Hargadine, who was fifth with a throw of 155-0 and Willie Stewart ‘09, who placed eighth at 144-4.
Other field event participants in the top 10 for the men’s team were Fonz Jenkins ‘10 (third in the pole vault with a leap off 11-7 3/4), C.J. Moore ‘09 (sixth in the triple jump at 38-3/4) and Snyder (eighth in the discus with a throw of 128-10).
The 4x400-meter relay team was fourth in 3:37.70 and the 4x100 unit took fifth in 44.14. Winnon Brunson ‘10 placed sixth in the 100 in 11.24 and 10th in the 200 in 22.90. Placing ninth were Davis Hermann ‘11 in the 400 (52.90) and Nick Sparr ‘09 in the 1500 (4:16.71).
On the women’s side, Liza Brost ‘10 was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 17.04 and Vicki Diedrichs had an identical placing in the 400 hurdles in 70.27. Brost was eighth in the 400 hurdles in 72.58.
The Pioneers travel to Galesburg next week to participate in the 2008 Midwest Conference Championships hosted by Knox College.

David Montgomery '10 was 10th in the 1500 in 4:09.61, Kyle Lynch-Klarup '10 took 12th in the 800 in 1:59.21 and Mike Hargadine '09 wound up 14th in the pole vault at 12-6. Fonz Jenkins '10 added a 15th-place finish in the pole vault with a leap of 11-6 ¼, while Chris Wilson '11 had an identical placing in the 5000 with a time of 16:14.24. Noah DeLong '11 was 18th in the 800 in 1:59.86.
Grinnell travels to Pella next week to participate in the Central College Invitational. The meet starts at noon.
Results
Molly Kratz '08 (pictured) sparked the Grinnell women's track and field team at the Pioneers' own Dick Young Classic Saturday by placing second in the 400-meter dash.
She had a time of 60.27 seconds.
The 4x800 relay team of Frances Leslie '10, Leah Russell '11, Kratz and Allison Louthan '08 wound up third in 10:19.41. Louthan added an eighth-place finish in the 1500. She had a time of 5:00.34.
As a team, Grinnell finished with 14th with 16 points. Nebraska Wesleyan defended its title with 176.5 points.
On the men's side, Grinnell had a pair of wins to lead the team.
David Montgomery '10 got the Pioneers off on the right foot by winning the 10,000-meter run in 32:12.10, while Mike Hargadine '09 claimed top honors in the pole vault with a leap of 13-5 ¼.
Montgomery was one of four Pioneers to place in the 10,000. Others were Henry Reich '09 (second in 33:14.86), Ethan Heppner '11 (sixth in 33:54.50) and Sam Calisch '10 (seventh in 34:19.35).
The Pioneers also showed their depth in the javelin with four place winners. They were Willie Stewart '09 (second at 176-8), Marquis Bradley '11 (third at 162-11), Hargadine (fourth at 160-9) and Joey Snyder '10 (eighth at 152-4).
In the middle and long distances, Kyle Lynch-Klarup '10 was eighth in the 800 (1:58.41), Nick Spaar '09 was eighth in the 3000 steeplechase (10:02.65) and Noah DeLong '09 was ninth in the 1500 (4:10.74). DeLong, Charlie Knuth '08, Chris Wilson '11 and Lynch-Klarup placed fifth in the 4x800 relay in 8:16.04.
Grinnell finished with 61 points, just two behind fifth-place Simpson and eight short of fourth place Iowa Western Community College. Nebraska Wesleyan defended its Dick Young Classic crown with 201 points.
The Pioneers will participate in the Kip Janvrin Invitational hosted by Simpson College in Indianola on Friday.

A pair of Grinnell College graduates competed in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Women's Marathon Trials Sunday on the Boston Marathon Course.
Nicole Cueno '02 was 55th in the race with a clocking of 2:44:54, while Heather May '92 placed 65th in 2:45:41. The winner was Deena Kastor, who ran 2:29:35.

The biggest field ever will converge on Les Duke Track on Saturday as Grinnell College hosts the annual Dick Young Classic.
A total of 22 teams are entered for the men's and women's meet, which begins at 9 a.m.
Nebraska Wesleyan swept both team titles last year, as their men scored 232 points and the women tallied 162.3 points. Grinnell's men were fifth with 52 points and the Pioneer women placed sixth with 51.5.
Others in this year's field besides Nebraska Wesleyan and Grinnell are Central, Clarke, Coe, Colorado College, Cornell College, D4 National Champions, Faith Baptist, Graceland, Grand View, Iowa Central, Iowa Wesleyan, Iowa Western Community College, Knox, Loras, Mount Mercy, North Iowa Area Community College, University of Northern Iowa, Northwestern College (Minn.), Simpson and William Penn.
Grinnell College's Allison Louthan '08 has qualified to compete in the women's university/college 10,000-meter run at the Drake Relays in Des Moines next Thursday afternoon.
The event is slated for 4 p.m. at Jim Duncan Track.
Louthan, an All-American performer at last fall's NCAA Division III National Cross Country Meet, is one of 27 women entered in the 10,000. That very event was won by Louthan's former Grinnell teammate, Sarah Spencer, in 2007.
Anna Gilbert '09 (pictured) won the pole vault to pace the Grinnell College track and field teams at the Cornell College Invitational on Sunday in Mount Vernon.
Gilbert's winning leap was 3.05 meters. Bhoomika Partap '11 was sixth in the event at 1.83 meters. Frances Leslie '10 placed sixth in the 1500-meter run in 5:27.38.
On the men's side, Scott Phillips '11 was fifth in the 100 in 11.86 and seventh in the 200 in 24.29. Curtis McCoy '10 placed sixth in the discus at 34.33 meters.
2008 Cornell Invite Results
The Grinnell College track and field teams head to Mount Vernon on Sunday to compete in the Cornell College Invitational. The meet had been scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Action begins at 9 a.m. Grinnell's next competition after that will be its lone home meet of the season, the Dick Young Classic on April 19 at Les Duke Track. That meet also starts at 9 a.m.
Marquis Bradley '11 was seventh in the men's javelin and Joey Snyder '10 eighth to lead the Grinnell College track and field teams at the Wartburg Select Track and Field Meet Saturday in Waverly.
Bradley threw 49.25 meters and Snyder 48.93 meters. Other top 20 finishers for Grinnell were Willie Stewart '09 at 45.72 meters and Mike Hargadine '09 at 44.71.
Anna Gilbert '09 tied for 13th in the women's pole vault at 2.90 meters, while Hargadine tied for 16th in the men's version of the event at 4.10 meters. Several Pioneers fared well in the men's 5000-meter run - Henry Reich '09 (15th in 16:05.99), Charlie Knuth '08 (16th in 16:26.10), Ethan Heppner '11 (17th in 16:27.51) and Nick Sparr '09 (16:42.78).
Molly Kratz '08 was 15th in the women's 400 in 1:02.14, while three Pioneers had 17th-place finishes - Winnon Brunson '10 in the men's 200 (23.98), Chris Wilson '11 in the men's 1500 (4:15.66) and Snyder in the men's discus (37.18 meters). Brunson was 18th in the men's 100 in 11.37, while Davis Hermann '11 placed 19th in the men's 200 (24.17) and 20th in the 400 (54.06).

The Grinnell College track and field teams head to Waverly this weekend to compete in the Wartburg College Select Invitational.
The heptahlon/decathlon portion of the meet begins at 4 p.m. on Friday and resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday. The regular meet starts at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Other schools bringing men's and women's teams to the meet are Wartburg, Loras, Simpson, UW-Platteville, St. Thomas, Monmouth, University of Dubuque and Western Illinois. Augustana is bringing a men's team, while the College of St. Benedict and UW-La Crosse have women's teams entered.
Charlie Knuth '08 placed eighth in the 3000-meter steeplechase to pace the Grinnell College track and field teams at the 49er Classic hosted by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Knuth finished the race in 9:59.44. He was the lone Grinnell trackster to place in the meet, which was the Pioneers' first outdoor competition of the season. No team score was kept at the meet.
Grinnell's next action is April 4 in Waverly for the Wartburg College Heptathlon/Decathlon.

The top place winner was Allison Louthan '08, who was second in the women's 3000-meter run in 10:27.06. Anna Gilbert '09 was fourth in the women's pole vault with a leap of 2.88 meters, the same placing garnered by the Pioneer women's and men's distance medley relay teams. Grinnell's women ran the race in 13:39.64 with Emily Lynam '09, Maia Olson '11, Lilah Melzer '11 and Maja Gamble '11 and the men ran 11:01.45 with Chris Knap '08, Mike Hargadine '09, Shyam Deshpande '11 and David Montgomery '10.
Placing fifth were Frances Leslie '10 in the women's 800 in 2:28.73 and Kyle Lynch-Klarup '10 in the men's 800 in 2:01.58. Grinnell also placed fifth in the men's 4x400 relay with Fernando Jenkins '10, Davis Hermann '11, Hargadine and Lynch-Klarup in 3:37.73 and the women were sixth in that event in 4:21.04 with Molly Kratz '08, Leslie, Leah Russell '11 and Olson. Kratz '08 was seventh in the women's 400 in 1:02.43.
Other top 10 finishers for the Pioneers were Sam Calisch '10 and Charlie Knuth in the men's 3000 (ninth and 10th in 9:12.42 and 9:14.23, respectively), plus Maggie Kamraczewski '10 in the women's triple jump (10th at 9.11 meters).
Grinnell was fourth in the women's team standings with 44 points and the men were sixth with 36. Monmouth College won both divisions, scoring 237 on the men's side and 202 in the women's division.
Day 2 Results
The Grinnell College men are fourth and the women sixth following the opening day of the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at Illinois College.
The Pioneer men have 23 points and the women 17. Monmouth College is first in both divisions, as the men have 109 points and the women 80.
The Pioneers had a pair of runner-up finishes on the day, both coming in the 5000-meter run. Allison Louthan '08 was second in the women's version of the event in 17:53.26, while David Montgomery '10 was the runner-up in the men's running in 15:32.09. Maja Gamble '11 also placed in the women's 5000, taking sixth in 19:29.98.
Other Pioneer individuals who placed Friday were Mike Hargadine '09 in the men's pole vault (fifth at 3.98 meters), Chris Wilson '11 in the men's mile run (fifth in 4:31.23) and Emily Lynam '09 in the women's mile (eighth in 5:43.27). Grinnell also placed in a number of relays. Gilbert went 9-6 ¼ in the event. Grinnell's men had a strong showing in the mile run, with four competitors placing in the top 20. Maggie Kamraczewski '10 had a pair of strong finishes in two women's jumping events, placing ninth in the triple jump at 30-2 ¼ and 16th in the long jump at 13-9 ¾. Maja Gamble '11 of Grinnell was 10th in the women's 3000-meter run in 11:31.96, while Rachel Whitfield '10 placed 17th in 11:49.46. The Pioneer women's 4x400 relay team was 15th in 4:29.96 and Molly Kratz '08 placed 16th in the 400 in 1:03.24.

The Pioneers also got second in the women's 4x200 relay and the men were third in that event. Also placing third was Kyle Lynch-Klarup '10 in the men's 800.

Placing fourth were Molly Kratz in the women's 400 (1:04.32), Charlie Knuth in the men's 800 (2:04.17), Leah Russell in the women's pole vault (1.98 meters), the women's 4x400 relay team (4:42.23) and the men's 4x400 relay squad (3:46.64).
Grinnell placed fourth in the team standings in both divisions, the women scoring 33 points and the men 32. Simpson College was the champion in both classes.

Louthan toured the track in 5:19.85 and finished only behind Rachelle Hawkins of Cornell College, who established a Small Center record with a clocking of 5:12.53. Maja Gamble '11 was 13th in the race in 5:50.12, while Frances Leslie '10 added a 14th-place finish for Grinnell in the 400 with a time of 66.71.

The Grinnell College track and field teams will kick off the 2008 indoor campaign Saturday at the Hilltop Open in Mount Vernon. The meet, hosted by Cornell College, begins at 11 a.m.
The Pioneers boast big numbers on both the men's and women's teams this season, and the distance crew looks strong as usual. Among the top women long distance runners are Allison Louthan '08, an All-American cross country performer last fall, and all-conference performer Maja Gamble '11.
The men's long distance crew has plenty of depth, including the likes of David Montgomery '10, Sam Calisch '10, Charlie Knuth '08, Nick Sparr '09, Ethan Heppner '11, Mike Gallagher '10, Henry Reich '09, Alex Reich '11 and David Krist '08. Montgomery and Knuth were both all-region cross country performers last fall.
Montgomery earned all-conference honors three times last year in track, twice in the indoor season (3000- and 5000-meter runs) and again in the outdoor season (5000). Sparr as all-conference in both the 3000 steeplechase and 10,000, while Knuth was all-conference in the indoor distance medley relay.
The middle distance events are also well-covered. Leading the charge on the men's side are Noah DeLong '11, Tommie Jamison '09, Kyle Lynch-Klarup '10, Shyam Deshpande '11 and Chris Wilson '11. Jamison was on the all-conference indoor distance medley team. As for the women, Becky Bessinger '09, Rachel Whitfield '10, Nora Colter '10 and Gamble will contribute both in the middle and long distances, while Emily Lynam '09 and Lilah Melzer '11 are strong middle distance candidates. Bessinger was all-conference in the 3000 steeplechase, as well as the indoor 3000.
Leading the sprint group on the men's side are Winnon Brunson '10, Nick Merkin '08,
Jordan Courtain '10, Mike Hargadine '09, Fernando Jenkins '10, Mike Martinez '10, Ben Johnson '10 and C.J. Moore '09, while top women's candidates in those events are Molly Kratz '08, Frances Leslie '10, Candyce Jones '10, Maia Olsen '11 and Maggie Kamraczewski '10. Leading hurdlers include women Liza Brost '1 and Olsen, as well as Sam Levy '11 and Greg Swanson '10 on the men's side. Swanson was an all-conference performer in both the 110 and 400 hurdles a year ago.
Leading the throws group are Willie Stewart '08, Marquis Bradley '11, Hargadine, Joey Snyder '10, Jordan Medalia '08, Curtis McCoy '10 and Kennon Landis '09, as well as Sarah Freeman 09 for the women.
Top pole vaulters for the men are Hargadine, Jenkins, Hugh Redford '10 and Anna Gilbert '09, while Kamraczewski leads the triple and long jumpers.
Will and Evelyn Freeman are the team's men's and women's coaches, while assistant coaches include Max Hawsey, Floyd Webb, Nick Voss and Ben Raphelson.

Grinnell College graduate Nicole Cueno '02 has qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the women's marathon.
The race, hosted by the Boston Athletic Association, will be contested Sunday, April 20, 2008. That is the day before the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. Cueno qualified for the Trials when she ran a personal-best time of 2:42:03 at the California International Marathon on Dec. 2, 2007, taking nearly 10 minutes off her previous-best time. Cueno finished second in the race and ran negative splits each of the last four miles. She joins another Grinnell graduate, Heather May, as an Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon.
Cueno, who holds 11 track and field records at Grinnell and was named to the College's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007, currently works at the YWCA of Minneapolis.
The Grinnell College women's track and field team has earned recognition off of the track by earning Academic All-American honors. The team finished with the sixth-best GPA among all of Division III teams recognized at 3.50.
Seventy-three Division III institutions received recognition with Whitworth College holding the top spot with a GPA of 3.629. The Iowa Intercollegiate Conference held the top spot among all conferences with eight teams.
A team must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 to be eligible for nomination.
Sarah Spencer '08 wrapped up competition at this year's NCAA Track and Field Championships with a 13th-place finish in the 5,000 meter run on Saturday afternoon.
The Sioux Falls, S.D., native reached the finish line in a time of 17:32.41. Amherst's Shauneen Garrahan, who also captured the 10,000 meter run on Friday, won the race in a time of 16:49.54, setting a new J.J. Keller Field record.
The race closes the book on another solid season for the junior, who will now turn her focus towards helping the Pioneers to another strong cross country season in the fall.
Sarah Spencer '08 shaved two seconds off of her time that qualified her for this year's NCAA Track and Field Championships en route to an eighth-place finish in the 10,000 meter run.
The Sioux Falls, S.D., native earns All-American honors with a final time of 36:03.95, bettering her time of 36:05.20 which she set last month at the Drake Relays. Amherst's Shauneen Garrahan won the race in a time of 34:48.19.
Spencer will close out her competition on Saturday afternoon when she takes part in the 5,000 meter run which is scheduled to begin at 4:20 p.m.
The Grinnell College women's track and field team closed out the 2007 Midwest Conference Track & Field Championships with a sixth place overall team finish. Sarah Spencer '08 captured the conference crown in the 5,000 meter run for the second straight season with a time of 17:12.99. Katie Ryan '07 finished just behind Spencer with a time of 18:23.10.
Becky Bessinger '09 added to the depth of the Pioneers distance running with a third place performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 11:41.55. The Pioneers 4x100 meter relay team of Liza Brost '10, Molly Kratz '08, Kate Diedrick '07 and Frances Leslie '10 took sixth (52.21), while the 4x400 meter relay team finished eighth.
Both Ryan and Spencer landed spots on this year's Most Outstanding Runners Team.
Monmouth took the team title with 219.50 points with Carroll in second with 107 points.
Final Day Results
The Grinnell College women's track and field team sits in third place after day one of the Midwest Conference Championships with 32 points. Sarah Spencer '08 captured second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:42.44, while Katie Ryan '07 brought home the best finish for the Pioneers by capturing the 10,000 meter run in a time of 38:28.65.
As a team the Pioneers sit just four points behind Carroll College for second place as Monmouth has stormed out to a comfortable lead in the team race with 83.5 points.
Nora Colter '10 took fourth for Grinnell in the 10,000 (41:52.77) as Elizabeth Jach '09 followed in fifth with a time of 41:57.06.
The Pioneers will close out the championships on Saturday as events kick-off at 9:00 a.m.
