Grinnell swimming and diving teams make annual trip to Florida
The Grinnell College men's and women's swimming and diving teams will continue a long holiday-break tradition in early 2008 with an annual trip south.

For the 13th year in a row, the Pioneers are heading to Florida for training sessions and even a dual meet. The destination for the eighth year in a row is Naples.

"From a coaching standpoint it's great," said Grinnell coach Erin Hurley of the trip, which lasts from Jan. 3 to 15. "We get to work out twice a day and also have the opportunity to train outdoors."

Team bonding is also a benefit of the trip, the coach added. "In terms of team chemistry, this trip is very important for the team members and coaches," she said. "It's a chance for people to get to know their teammates better. They get a chance to read, sleep, eat, go to the beach, spend time with friends and just get an academic break in preparation for second semester. Plus, with our training, they come back in better physical shape. Mentally and physically, it's a great deal for us."

Training takes place at the Golden Gate Aquatic Center, the same venue where the team faces Connecticut College in a dual meet on Jan. 10. "That's always worked out well," said Hurley. "We're down there and they're down there, so we always go against them."

Hurley said the trip also allows the team the opportunity to meet up with Grinnell alums. "One of the College's trustees, Susan Holden McCurry '71, has a home down there and invites us to a reception with the alumni," said Hurley. "That's a lot of fun for everybody."

The Grinnell swimming and diving teams are both off to successful starts, including runner-up finishes at the Mutual of Omaha Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska-Omaha. In dual meets, both the men and women own 2-1 marks.

Following the dual with Connecticut College, the Pioneers' next action will also serve as their final home meet of the year. The Grinnell Invitational is slated for Jan. 18 and 19 at Obermiller Pool.

Grinnell women's swimming and diving team seeks big season

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams will be in action this weekend with a pair of exhibition events.

The annual Scarlet and Black Dual intrasquad meet is slated for 7 p.m. Friday at Obermiller Pool. On Saturday, at noon, the Pioneers host the Randall Relays Alumni Meet.

Grinnell's first official competition will be Nov. 16 when Loras College visits for a 6 p.m. dual. The next day, the Pioneers travel to the University of Chicago to take on the hosts and Lake Forest College. That event begins at 2 p.m.

Head Coach Erin Hurley and the Pioneers will hope to capture an unprecedented tenth consecutive Midwest Conference title in 2007-08. MWC swimmer of the year, Valerie Stimac '09 is back along with individual conference champions Amanda Keledjian '08 (two titles), Meghan McDoniel '10 (two titles), and Amy Hadow '10 (one title) and Alex Peitz '10 (one title). A host of returning talented Pioneer swimmers and divers along with added depth from the incoming first-year class promise to make for an exciting season. Here's how the team shapes up:

Sprint Freestyle
After finishing in 5 of the top 6 places at MWC last season, the sprints should still remain a strength for the Pioneers. Stimac returns to add to her conference crowns in 50, 100 and 200 Freestyle. Chloe Moryl '10, Emily Summers '10 and new comers Andrea Leiser '11 and Jacqueline Anderson '11 will add to the depth of the Pioneer sprinting contingency. With the addition of Allie Kossoy and Amanda Keledjian (both '08), Pioneer relays should be unstoppable. In 2007, the Pioneers swept all three relay distances at the MWC Championships, setting MWC and school records in the 200 and 400 distances.

Distance Freestyle
Alex Peitz '10 will return to challenge for the conference title in the 500 and 1650, after finishing third and second, respectively, in those events last season. Seniors Emily Sipfle, Kristen Audet and Liv Gibbons (all '08), as well as sophomore, Carly Kruse '10 return to make up the bulk of the distance crew. Last year this Kruse and Sipfle finished 11th and 12th in the 1650 as well as top 16 in the 500. First years Morgan Horton and Andrea Leiser (both '11) could add valuable depth in the mile and 500.

Backstroke
After losing the current school record holder and defending conference champion, Julia McHugh '07, to graduation the Pioneers will look to other talent to surface in the backstroke events. Kossoy, Peitz and Mere Greta '08 will lead this year's squad. Last year Kossoy had the fourth fastest 200 time in the conference. Although untested, Peitz will add some fire to shorter backstroke events, while a healthy Greta could be the secret weapon the Pioneers are looking for in the backstroke events. First-year Ellen Salaries '11 will also add depth in the backstroke events.

Breaststroke
The Pioneers will rely on returning Conference Champion Meghan McDoniel '10, as well as classmates Emily Summers, Lily Camp, and Asia Sample (all '10) will be highly relied upon to rack up points in these events. Margaret Smith '09 should continue to be a threat in these events based on the improvements she made in her first two seasons.

Butterfly
Amanda Keledjian '08 returns to defend her two conference titles in the 200 butterfly, along with Peitz in the 200 and the 100 conference title holder Amy Hadow (both in 2007). Keledjian also has three runner-up finishes in the 100 in 2005, 2006 and 2007. With the addition of Sipfle, first-year Andrea Leiser, and Stimac the butterfly will be one of Grinnell's deepest events.

Individual Medley
McDoniel looks to defend her title and retain her school record in the 200, with two-year Conference runner up Keledjian and Leiser in the chase. Keledjian, Peitz, Kossoy, and Kruse will form a formidable scoring unit in the 400 IM.

Diving
Andie Schrage '08 and Jordan Allison '09 return to continue their diving campaign. At last year's championship, Schrage finished 2nd and 3rd in the 1 and 3-meter, while Allison added a fifth place finished on both boards at last year's championship. Alyssa Yokota-Lewis '08 and first year Hannah LaFollette '11 will add to this unit. LaFollette, an Illinois State qualifier, brings a strong diving background to the program.

Grinnell swimming and diving teams help in the fight against cancer
Alt Text

On Nov. 6, members of the Grinnell College swimming and diving teams participated in the secnod annual Ted Mullin "Leave it in the Pool" Hour of Power. This event is an all-out relays for one hour, with all six relays staying within the same lap.

The event, hosted by Carleton College, benefits the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital. Edward "Ted" Mullin was a member of the Carleton College men's swimming and diving team and captain for two years until his death in September 2006 from synovial cell sarcoma, a rare form of soft tissue cancer. His leadership, spirit and compassion continue to inspire many.

Beyond raising funds for the fight against sarcoma-the "orphan disease" among cancers-this event is used to unify Division III swimming and diving teams in a simultaneous, cross-country effort to raise team spirit, awareness and philanthropic support of the work being done to eradicate this deadly disease.

Funds raised for the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research will act as seed funding for the University of Chicago's Section of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, allowing collaborative efforts between clinicians and physician-scientists in the identification of the causes of sarcoma, and translating those findings into improved therapies for cancer patients like Ted.
