The Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team won its eighth Midwest Conference title in a row with a dominating weekend performance at Obermiller Pool.

The Pioneers piled up 1301.5 points in the three-day event which wrapped up Sunday, Feb. 15, to easily beat Monmouth College, which had 825.

Sparking Grinnell on the final day of the meet was Cyrus Mistry '11 (pictured), who shattered multiple records on his way to winning the 200-yard breaststroke. He earned an NCAA B provisional qualifying mark with a clocking of 2:07.05, which beat his own school and meet record of 2:08.16 set last year as well as his pool record of 2:08.91, which he set in Sunday's preliminaries.

Grinnell won two other events Sunday. Nate Wittnam '09 took first in the 200 butterfly in 2:00.13, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Marco Fulgoni '12, Tommy Olson '10, Michael Schoelz '12 and Tom Lankiewicz '12 won in 3:14.52.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Lankiewicz in the 1650 freestyle (16:51.37) and Glenn Clark in the 200 butterfly (2:02.79), while third place went to Aaron Bisch '12 in the 200 backstroke (2:06.01) and Mike Weslander '09 in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.23).

Grinnell's Nick Smith '10 was named the meet's Men's Diver of the Year, while Erin Hurley was tabbed Men's Coach of the Year (see story below).

Grinnell's women also were victorious, winning their 11th MWC title in a row with 1253 points. Lawrence University placed second with 583 points.

Leading Grinnell on the final day of the meet was Valerie Stimac '09, who broke four records on her way to winning the 100-yard freestyle. Her time of 53.34 shattered her own school record of 53.75 set in 2007, the MWC meet record and overall conference record of 53.72 set by Alyssa Bonine of Lawrence in 1998 and the pool record of 53.58 set by Amanda Croix of Carroll University.

Grinnell also got wins from Morgan Horton '11 in the 200 butterfly (2:13.98) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Stimac, Meghan McDoniel '10, Casey Strickler '12 and Horton (3:40.37).

Placing third for Grinnell were McDoniel in the 100 freestyle (55.98), Laura McElroy '11 in the 200 backstroke (2:19.54) and Morgan Bober '12 in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.20).

Grinnell's Kelly Bruce '12 was named the meet's Women's Diver of the Year.
Day 3 Results

After Grinnell College swept the women's and men's Midwest Conference swimming and diving team titles, the Pioneers went on to win half of the individual awards presented at the conclusion of the meet.

Nick Smith '10 and Kelly Bruce '12 (standing left and second from left in photo on the left) were named the 2009 Men's and Women's Divers of the Year, while Erin Hurley (left side in photo on the right) was named 2009 Men's Coach of the Year.

Lawrence University's Hayley Vatch and Peter Brengel (left photo) were named the Women's and Men's Swimmers of the Year, while Carroll University's Joanne Brandtjen (right photo) was named Women's Coach of the Year.

With school records by Cyrus Mistry '11 and Thomas Lankiewicz '12, the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team inched closer to winning its eighth Midwest Conference title in a row Saturday, Feb. 14, at Obermiller Pool.

Mistry (left) broke his own school record of 59.71 while winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.63, while Lankiewicz (center) set a new standard in the 400 IM by winning in 4:15.30. That broke the previous Grinnell record of 4:15.34 by Dave Ressner in 1991.

Mistry also helped the 200 medley relay team to victory in 1:38.62 along with Tommy Olson '10, Dan Neely '09 and Marco Fulgoni '12, while Lankiewicz was on the winning 800 freestyle relay team with Ross Noecker '11, Pat Blachly '09 and Paul Gagne '10. Their time was 7:13.49.

Grinnell's other winner was Nick Smith '10 (right), who completed a diving sweep at the meet by placing first in the one-meter event with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 428.50.

Nate Wittnam '09 was a runner-up in the 100 butterfly (54.54), while third place went to Noecker in the 200 freestyle (1:49.48) and Michael Schoelz '12 in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.23).

Grinnell now has 876.5 points compared to runner-up Monmouth College's score of 641.

On the women's side, Morgan Bober's '12 multiple record-breaking performance helped the Pioneers move closer to their 11th MWC team title in a row.

Bober shattered the meet, school, pool and overall MWC record during preliminary action of the 100-yard breaststroke and earned an NCAA B qualifying standard in the process.

She had a time of 1:06.39 in the prelims and went on to win the event in the finals with a time of 1:08.28. Her prelim clocking bettered the previous MWC meet record of 1:07.78 by Kim Makar of Lake Forest College in 1996, school record of 1:07.80 by Sheryl Thedford in 1984, pool record of 1:08.41 and overall MWC record of 1:07.43 by Makar in 1998.

Bober also helped the 200 medley relay team to victory in a time of 1:51.52. She teamed with Alex Peitz '10, Amy Hadow '10 and Valerie Stimac '09 in the win. Hadow and Stimac were both double winners on the day. Stimac helped the 800 freestyle relay team to victory in 8:01.85 with Meghan McDoniel '10, Casey Strickler '12 and Morgan Horton '11, while Hadow won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.65.

Kelly Bruce '12 was the Pioneers' other champ, as she completed a diving sweep at the meet by placing first in the three-meter event with an NCAA provisional qualifying score of 429.35.

The wins helped put Grinnell comfortably in command in the team standings with 901 points, well ahead runner-up Lawrence University's score of 421.

Runners-up for Grinnell on Saturday were Horton in the 400 IM (4:46.60), Stimac in the 200 freestyle (1:58.83), Alex Peitz '10 in the 100 backstroke (1:03.68) and Hannah LaFollette '11 in three-meter diving (400.80), Jordan Allison '09 was third in three-meter diving with a score of 355.30.

Day 2 Results

Marco Fulgoni '12 (left) was a triple winner, while Dan Neely '09 (center) and Tommy Olson '10 (right) won two events each as the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team began making a push for its eighth Midwest Conference title in a row Friday, Feb. 13.

Their efforts gave the Pioneers a team score of 382.5 after the first day of action at Obermiller Pool, well ahead of runner-up Monmouth College's total of 257. Grinnell's women, at the same time, were making a push toward their 11th title in a row as they scored 394 points compared to second-place Lawrence University's score of 197.

Fulgoni won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.96 and was part of the winning 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams that posted times of 1:28.03 and 3:38.95, respectively. Neely and Olson also swam both relays, while Michael Schoelz '12 completed the freestyle team and Cyrus Mistry '11 the medley squad.

Other winners for Grinnell on the first day were Tom Lankiewicz '12 in the 200 IM, whose time of 1:57.79 was just off school-record pace, and Nick Smith '10 in three-meter diving with a score of 374.30.

Mark Sullivan '10 was second in three-meter diving with a score of 358.75, while third-place finishes went to Paul Gagne '10 in the 500 freestyle (4:55.47) and Olson in the 50 freestyle (22.36).

On the women's side, Kelly Bruce '12 set a school-record in one-meter diving as Grinnell began its drive to an 11th straight team title. Bruce recorded a score of 420.45 in the event and was one of nine Pioneer women to win titles on Friday.

Valerie Stimac '09 was a double winner, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle (24.86) and as part of the 400 medley relay team with Alex Peitz '10, Morgan Bober '12 and Amy Hadow '10 (4:05.25). The other champs were Laura McElroy '11, Meghan McDoniel '10, Casey Strickler '12 and Chloe Moryl '10, who won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.71.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Morgan Horton '11 in the 500 freestyle (5:18.98), Bober in the 200 IM (2:15.61) and Hannah LaFollette '11 in one-meter diving (367.90). Jordan Allison '09 was third in one-meter diving with a score of 360.10.

Day 1 Results

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams will look to continue their dominance in the Midwest Conference as the Pioneers host the annual league meet this weekend in Obermiller Pool.

Action begins on Friday, Feb. 13, and runs through Saturday and Sunday. Grinnell's women will be looking to run their MWC title streak to a dozen even, while the men are shooting for their eighth crown in a row.

Among the returnees for Grinnell's women is 2008 MWC Swimmer of the Year Meghan McDoniel '10, who won the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke at last year's meet. She was also a part of the winning 400 medley, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relays, the latter which set a MWC record in 8:00.77. Others on the 800 freestyle team were Valerie Stimac '09, Jacqueline Anderson '11 and Morgan Horton '11.

Alex Peitz '10, Amy Hadow '10 and Stimac completed the 400 medley squad and Stimac, Anderson and Chloe Moryl '10 were on the 400 freestyle team. Grinnell also won the 200 freestyle relay with Stimac, Laura McElroy '11, Anderson and Moryl, while other individual champs included Stimac in the 100 and 200 freestyles, Moryl in the 50 freestyle, Hadow in the 100 butterfly and Peitz in the 200 backstroke.

Stimac owns the MWC's top time this season in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, while Kelly Bruce '12 is tops in one-meter diving (six and 11 dives) and three-meter diving (six and 11). Grinnell also has the best time in all five relays.

Among returnees for Grinnell's men are 2007 MWC Men's Swimmer of the Year Nate Wittnam '09. He teamed with two other returnees, Cyrus Mistry '11 and Glenn Clark '10, to win the 400 medley relay at last year's league meet. Mistry also won the 200 breaststroke at the event in a meet and school record time of 2:08.16.

Mistry owns the best marks in the MWC this season in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, Wittnam is tops in the 200 butterfly, Nick Smith '10 leads both one-meter diving (six and 11 dives) as well as three-meter diving (11 dives) and newcomer Thomas Lankiewicz '12 is best in the 200 freestyle, plus the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Grinnell also has the top times in all five relays.

This year marks the final time Grinnell hosts the MWC Championships at Obermiller Pool. In 2011, Grinnell will host the meet at the natatorium, currently under construction, which is part of the second phase of the College's Athletic and Fitness Center project. In addition to the natatorium, Phase II includes a new fieldhouse, offices, racquetball courts, classrooms, training and equipment rooms, and additional locker rooms.
Meet Information

Grinnell College's Thomas Lankiewicz '12 has been named the Midwest Conference Male Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week.

Lankiewicz showed his versatility during a busy weekend with strong home performances against Iowa Conference opponents Coe College and Luther College. Against Luther on Saturday, Jan. 31, he won the 200-yard IM in 2:03.08 and added runner-up finishes in the 500 freestyle in 5:02.76 and as part of the 400 freestyle relay team. His 200 IM time is tops in the conference this season.

A day earlier against Coe, he claimed the 200 backstroke in 2:05.41 and was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:11.06. He was also part of the runner-up 200 freestyle relay team.

The Female Performer of the Week is Hayley Vatch of Lawrence University.

Paul Gagne '10, Tom Lankiewicz '12 and Nick Smith '10 were all winners for the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team in a dual meet with Luther College Saturday, Jan. 31, at Obermiller Pool.

Gagne (left) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:43.28, Lankiewicz (center) was first in the 200 IM in 2:03.08 and Smith (right) placed first in one-meter diving with a score of 225.60.

Lankiewicz was also a runner-up in the 500 freestyle (5:02.76) and as part of the 400 freestyle relay team with Marco Fulgoni '12, Jon Willuhn '10 and Ross Noecker '11 (3:22.82). Fulgoni was also a part of the runner-up 400 medley relay team with Tommy Olson '10, Cyrus Mistry '11 and Dan Neely '09 (3:45.09). Other runners-up were Olson in the 50 freestyle (22.94), Mistry in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.89), Smith in three-meter diving (218.40 points) and Michael Schoelz '12 in the 100 freestyle (50.41).

In the team standings, Luther defeated the Pioneers 152-91. On the women's side, Luther also won by a score of 129.5-111.5.

For the Pioneer women, Kelly Bruce '12 earned a provisional NCAA National Meet qualifying mark in diving and was one of a trio of double winners for the team.

Bruce's provisional mark came in her one-meter diving victory, where she scored 248.45 points. She also won three-meter diving with a score of 247.90. Morgan Bober '12 and Amy Hadow '10 were also double winners, as Bober won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.87), Hadow claimed top honors in the 100 butterfly (1:02.23) and both joined Alex Peitz '10 and Valerie Stimac '09 to win the 400 medley relay (4:13.54).

Runners-up for Grinnell were Chloe Moryl '10 in the 50 freestyle (27.05), Stimac in the 200 IM (2:18.39) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Casey Strickler '12, Margaret Smith '09, Meghan McDoniel '10 and Morgan Horton '11 (3:52.18).

A total of 13 members of the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving squad finished first in events at a dual meet against Coe College on Friday, Jan. 30, at Obermiller Pool. Those wins sparked the Pioneers to a 158-54 victory in the team standings.

Two Pioneers tasted victory three times each. Cyrus Mistry '11 (left) was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.64), 200 breaststroke (2:15.43) and as part of the 200 medley relay team along with Tommy Olson '10, Nate Wittnam '09 and Marco Fulgoni '12 (1:43.40). Wittnam (right) was the other triple winner as he was also first in the 200 butterfly (2:05.16) and as part of the 200 freestyle relay along with Fulgoni, Aaron Bisch '12 and Dan Neely '09 ( 1:33.38).

Nick Smith '10 won one- and three-meter diving (265.25 and 233.10 points, respectively). Other champs were Olson in the 50 freestyle (22.78), Paul Gagne '10 in the 200 freestyle (1:53.48), Michael Schoelz '12 in the 100 backstroke (1:01.14), Sebastian De Pascuale '12 in the 100 freestyle (54.18), Tom Lankiewicz '12 in the 200 backstroke (2:05.41), Jay Lidaka '10 in the 100 butterfly (56.71) and Ross Noecker '11 in the 200 IM (2:12.58).

On the women's side, a dozen Pioneers were event winners as they rolled past Coe 160-93.

Valerie Stimac '09 was a triple winner for the Pioneers, winning the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.43), 100 butterfly (1:02.13) and helping the 200 freestyle relay team to victory along with Meghan McDoniel '10, Morgan Horton '11 and Caitlin Short '12 (1:45.07). McDoniel also won the 100 backstroke (1:06.60) and Horton the 200 butterfly (2:19.98).

Morgan Bober '12 was a double winner, taking first in the 200 freestyle (2:08.48) and as part of the 200 medley relay along with Alex Peitz '10, Amy Hadow '10 and Emily Summers '10 (1:58.36). Other champs were Emma Willenborg '11 in the 1000 freestyle (12:10.76), Margaret Smith '09 in the 50 freestyle (27.67), Emily Bajet '12 in the 200 breaststroke (2:44.85) and Carly Kruse '10 in the 500 freestyle (5:57.28).

The Pioneers are at home again Saturday, Jan. 31, when Luther College visits Obermiller Pool. The meet starts at 1 p.m. After that contest, Grinnell has some time off before hosting the Midwest Conference Championships Feb. 13-15.

Cyrus Mistry '11 (pictured) claimed top honors in the 200-yard breaststroke for the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team at the Carleton College Mini-Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Mistry swam the event in 2:15.72. Runner-up finishes for the Pioneers went to Paul Gagne '10 in the 1650 freestyle (18:00.82), Nick Smith '10 in three-meter diving (217.50 points) and Tom Lankiewicz '12 in the 400 IM (4:30.97). Smith was third in one-meter diving (162.80) while Mistry placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.28).

Individual fourth places went to Patrick Thomas '10 in the 1650 freestyle (18:40.56), Nate Wittnam '09 in the 200 butterfly (2:04.95), Mark Sullivan '10 in one-meter diving (142.05 points) and three-meter diving (187.20) and Lankiewicz in the 200 backstroke (2:08.75) and 500 freestyle (5:11.28)

Lankiewicz, Pat Blachly '09, Michael Schoelz '12 and Wittnam were also fourth in the 800 freestyle relay (7:48.22).

For Grinnell's women, Kelly Bruce '12 and Hannah LaFollette '11 each won diving titles. Bruce was first in one-meter diving with a score of 241.90, while LaFollette was tops in three-meter diving with a score of 219.95. LaFollette was also second in one-meter diving (203.15) and Bruce in three-meter diving (219.80). Jordan Allison '09 added a fourth-place finish in one-meter diving with a score of 192.30.

Valerie Stimac '09 was second in the 100-yard freestyle (55.40) and part of the third-place 800 freestyle relay with Morgan Horton '11, Meghan McDoniel '10 and Casey Strickler '12 (8:26.52). Horton was fourth in the 1650 freestyle (19:19.10) and Alex Peitz '10 placed fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:26.66).

Thomas Lankiewicz '12 was victorious in the 400-yard IM to spark the Grinnell College swimming and diving team to a runner-up finish at its own invitational Saturday, Jan. 17, at Obermiller Pool.

Lankiewicz (pictured) won the event in a time of 4:23.83, beating his nearest competitor by more than 5 seconds. As at team, Grinnell finished with 494 points in the seven-team meet and was outdone only by Luther College's total of 745.

The quartet of Thomas Olson '10, Cyrus Mistry '11, Daniel Neely '09 and Marco Fulgoni '12 placed second in the 200 medley relay (1:41.81), while Mistry added a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.32). Olson was third in the 50 freestyle (22.70) and as part of the 400 freestyle relay with Neely, Fulgoni and Michael Schoelz '12 (3:21.89) Also placing third was Nick Smith '10 in one-meter diving (329.90 points).

Placing fourth was Mistry in the 400 IM (4:31.99), Nate Wittnam '09 in the 100 butterfly (57.29) and Schoelz in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.16). Wittnam, Michael Weslander '09, Pat Blachly '09 and Jon Willuhn '10 teamed up to place fifth in the 200 medley relay (1:44.62), while Wittnam, Blachly, Willuhn and Lankiewicz were fifth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:25.29). Other fifth places were garnered by Weslander in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.80) and Lankiewicz in the 1650 freestyle (18:01.08).

For the women, Amy Hadow '10 swam to victory in the 100-yard butterfly to help Grinnell to runner-up team honors. Hadow won the event in 1:02.29, beating her nearest competitor by more than 2 seconds. As a team, Grinnell finished with 497 points and was outdistanced in the eight-team event by only Luther College's total of 631.

Hadow also helped the 200 medley relay team to a runner-up finish along with Alex Peitz '10, Morgan Bober '12 and Valerie Stimac '09 (1:56.40). Stimac was also second in the 50 freestyle (26.14), while third places went to Bober in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.37), Morgan Horton '11 in the 400 IM (4:57.04) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Stimac, Horton, Meghan McDoniel '10 and Casey Strickler '12 (3:48.47).

Stimac was fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:01.85) as was Kelly Bruce '12 in three-meter diving (365.25 points), while fifth places went to Peitz in the 100 butterfly (1:06.27), McDoniel in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.28) and McDoniel, Caitlin Short '12, Chloe Moryl '10 and Emily Summers '10 in the 200 medley relay (2:00.77).

The Grinnell teams are back in action on Jan. 24 with a double dual against Carleton College and St. Cloud State at Carleton.
Saturday's Results

Michael Schoelz '12 (left0 and Thomas Lankiewicz '12 (right) each collected a pair of runner-up finishes to lead the way for the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving teams at their own invitational on Friday, Jan. 16, at Obermiller Pool.

Their efforts helped Grinnell to second in the team standings entering the final day of the event. The Pioneers have 251 points, while leader Luther College is at 365.

Lankiewicz was second in the 200 IM (2:03.44) and also swam on the runner-up 800 freestyle relay with Schoelz, Nate Wittnam '09 and Patrick Blachly '09 (7:36.81). Schoelz's other runner-up finish was in the 200 freestyle relay with Marco Fulgoni '12, Daniel Neely '09 and Thomas Olson '10 (1:30.99). Grinnell's other runner-up finish came from Cyrus Mistry '11 in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.01).

Third-places went to Michael Weslander '09 in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.54), Wittnam in the 200 butterfly (2:04.06), Nick Smith '10 in three-meter diving (3:14.80 points) and the 400 medley relay team of Fulgoni, Lankiewicz, Mistry and Wittnam (3:48.08). Aaron Bisch '12 was fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:25.53), while Mistry, Paul Gagne '10, Bisch and Ross Noecker '11 were fourth in the 800 freestyle relay (7:55.16).

Placing fifth were Olson in the 100 backstroke (59.39), Mark Sullivan '11 in three-meter diving (266.80 points), the 400 medley relay team of Neely, Weslander, Bisch and Glenn Clark '10 (3:56.67) and the 800 freestyle relay team of Clark, Ian Warlick '10, Sebastian De Pascuale '12 and Patrick Thomas '10 (8:14.87).

On the women's side, Valerie Stimac '09 earned three titles to pace the Pioneers. Stimac was first in the 200 IM (2:13.07) and 100 freestyle (54.37) and also swam on the winning 400 medley relay team with Morgan Bober '12, Alex Peitz '10 and Amy Hadow '10 (4:17.92). Kelly Bruce '12 also won one-meter diving (379.50 points) as the Pioneers were in second place in the team standings with 269 points. Luther College heads into the final day with the team lead with 311 points.

Stimac was also on the runner-up 200 freestyle relay with Margaret Smith '09, Meghan McDoniel '10 and Casey Strickler '12 (1:44.67). McDoniel and Strickler joined Morgan Horton'11 and Peitz on the third-place 800 freestyle relay team (8:30.78), while Horton was also third in the 200 butterfly (2:24.59).

Fourth places went to Bober in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.26), Peitz in the 200 butterfly (2:28.05) and Caitlin Short '12, Katherine Chung '12, Emily Bajet '12 and Horton in the 400 medley relay (4:31.95). Bober was fifth in the 200 IM (2:22.74), the same placing as Horton in the 500 freestyle (5:29.72), Martha Reilly '12 in the 200 butterfly (2:34.90), Hannah LaFollette '11 in one-meter diving (311.50 points) and Laura McElroy '11, Emily Summers '10, Lauren O'Hair '12 and Chloe Moryl '10 in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.13).

The meet concludes on Saturday, Jan. 17, with preliminaries starting at 9 a.m. and the finals at 5:30 p.m.
Friday's Results

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams get their first taste of home competition this season when they host their own invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16 and 17, and Obermiller Pool.

Joining the Pioneer women's and men's teams will be Augustana, Coe, Luther, Macalester and Morningside. Simpson and the University of Nebraska-Kearney will be sending only women's teams to the event.

Preliminary action begins at 9 a.m. both days. Finals on Friday are slated for 7 p.m., while finals on Saturday are at 5:30 p.m.

In last year's event, Grinnell placed second in the men's division and third in the women's division. Luther won both team titles, while Carthage placed second in the women's division and Macalester was third on the men's side.
Meet program (including schedule of events)

Cyrus Mistry '11 won the 200-yard IM in 2:07.44 to pace the Grinnell College men's swimming team at a dual meet Jan. 8 against Connecticut College in Naples, Fla.

Mistry was also second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.82 and part of the runner-up 200 medley relay team that swam 1:43.94. Other members were Tommy Olson '10, Dan Neely '09 and Jon Willuhn '10.

Olson also placed second in the 100 backstroke in 59.03, while Nate Wittnam '09 took second in the 100 butterfly in 56.56. Olson, Marco Fulgani '12, Tom Lankiewicz '12 and Michael Schoelz '12 added a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:31.67.

On the women's side, Valerie Stimac '09 was in on a pair of victories for the Pioneers. She won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.87 and was part of the champion 200 free relay team that finished in 1:45.32. Other members of that squad were Meghan McDoniel '10, Casey Strickler '12 and Morgan Horton '11.

Stimac was also second in the 200 freestyle in 2:04.24 and McDoniel took second in the 200 IM in 2:20.28. Amy Hadow '10 added a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.70 and was part of the second-place 200 medley relay team that swam 1:58.79. Other members were Caitlin Short '12, Morgan Bober '12 and Chloe Moryl '10.

In the team standings, Connecticut College won 144-62 in the men's meet and 138-72 in the women's meet. The Grinnell squads host their own invitational on Jan. 16-17 at Obermiller Pool.

Cyrus Mistry claimed runner-up honors in the 200 breaststroke to pace the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcon Invitational Saturday.

Mistry recorded a time of 2:12.68. He also was part of the seventh-place 200 medley relay team that placed seventh in 1:42.73. Other members of the relay team were Nate Wittman '09, Dan Neely '09 and Michael Schoelz '12.

Tom Lankiewicz '12 was fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:33.15, while Mike Weslander '09 took fifth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.27. Wittman added a seventh-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:06.78 and was eighth in the 200 backstroke in 2:09.28.

Nick Smith '10 was seventh in three-meter diving with a score of 170.85, while Neely, Schoelz, Lankiewicz and Marco Fulgoni '12 teamed up to place eighth in the 400 relay in 3:21.29.

As a team, Grinnell finished sixth with a score of 425. Luther won the meet with 816.

On the women's side, Valerie Stimac '09 swam to a third-placed finish in the 100 freestyle to lead the way for Grinnell in 54.23.

Kelly Bruce '12 added a fourth-place finish in three-meter diving with a score of 201.05. As a team, Grinnell finished seventh with 183 points. The champ was Minnesota State-Moorhead with 762.

Cyrus Mistry '11 recorded a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke to pace the Grinnell College men's swimming and diving team at the 2008 Falcon Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Friday.

Mistry, who swam the event in 1:01.67, also swam on the fourth-place 400 medley relay team and was seventh in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.19. Others that swam the 400 medley, which had a time of 3:46.00, were Marco Fulgoni '12, Tom Lankiewicz '12 and Nate Wittnam '09. Lankiewicz was fifth in the 200 individual medley in 2:05.07.

Fulgoni was also fifth in the 50 freestyle in 22.65 and was part of the 200 freestyle relay that was sixth in 1:30.94. Others in that relay were Jon Willuhn '10, Michael Schoelz '12 and Lankiewicz. Mike Weslander '09 was seventh in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.75, while Nick Smith '10 was seventh in three-meter diving with a score of 159.35.

On the women's side, Kelly Bruce '12 won the one-meter diving event to pace Grinnell. She had a score of 207.15.

Teammate Hannah LaFollette '11 was sixth in the event with 177.20. Valerie Stimac '09 placed in two events, taking fifth in the 50 freestyle in 25.49 and being a part of the 200 freestyle relay that was eighth in 1:44.32. Other team members in the 200 freestyle relay were Andrea Leiser '11, Jacqueline Anderson '11 and Casey Strickler '12.

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams rolled past Loras College Saturday afternoon in Dubuque, as the Pioneer men won 168-55 and the women 156-84.

With the wins, both Grinnell teams improved to 3-0 in dual meets on the season.

The Pioneers had nine men collect wins, including three victories by Tom Lankiewicz '12 in the 200 individual medley (2:05.24), 500 freestyle (5:06.81) and part of the 200 freestyle relay with Tommy Olson '10, Dan Neely '09 and Michael Schoelz '12 (1:31.02).

Olson and Neely were also on the first-place 200 medley relay with Cyrus Mistry '11 and Marco Fulgoni '12 (1:42.42). Mistry also won the 200 breaststroke (2:14.37), Fulgoni the 50 freestyle (22.96) and Schoelz the 100 freestyle (50.76). Nick Smith '10 was first in one-meter diving voluntary and optionals (148.00 and 192.85, respectively), Nate Wittnam won the 200 freestyle (1:52.29) and 200 backstroke (2:06.52) and Patrick Thomas '10 was tops in the 200 butterfly (2:15.02).

Ten Pioneer women were among those who won, including double champs Caitlin Short '12, Morgan Bober '12, Kelly Bruce '12 and Jacqueline Anderson '11. Short was first in the 200 backstroke (2:26.20), Bober the 200 individual medley (2:19.78), Anderson the 100 freestyle (57.55) and Bruce in one-meter diving voluntary and optionals (158.65 and 202.65, respectively).

Short, Bober, Andrea Leiser '11 and Valerie Stimac '09 also teamed up to win the 200 medley relay (1:57.57), while Anderson joined Margaret Smith '09, Morgan Horton '11 and Casey Strickler '12 to take first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.06). Martha Reilly '12 was first in the 1000 freestyle (11:46.77).

Individual women's runners-up for the Pioneers were Stimac in the 200 freestyle, Strickler in the 50 freestyle, Hannah LaFollette '11 in one-meter diving voluntary and optional, Emily Bajet '12 in the 200 butterfly, Leiser in the 100 freestyle, Horton in the 500 freestyle and Bober in the 200 breaststroke.

Individual men's runners-up for Grinnell were Jason Thumma '09 in the 1000 freestyle, Olson in the 50 freestyle, Mistry in the 200 individual medley, Glenn Clark '10 in the 200 butterfly, Fulgoni in the 100 freestyle and Aaron Bisch '12 in the 200 breaststroke. Bisch, Chris Dorman '12, Pat Blachly '09 and Jon Willuhn '10 were also second in the 200 medley relay.

Grinnell's next action is Dec. 5-6 at the Wisconsin-River Falls Invitational in Minneapolis.

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams will look to improve on their 2-0 dual records when they compete at Loras College in Dubuque on Saturday. The event begins at 1 p.m.

Both Grinnell teams are coming off double-dual sweeps of Lake Forest College and the University of Chicago last Saturday. Fifteen Pioneers overall tasted victory, including eight on the men's side. Four Pioneer men had two wins each - Tom Lankiewicz '12, Cyrus Mistry '11, Nick Smith '10 and Devin St. John '12. Morgan Bober '12 and Valerie Stimac '09 were each in on four victories for Grinnell's women.

Bober and Mistry were honored for their accomplishments by earning MWC Performer of the Week honors on Tuesday.

Following the meet, Grinnell's next action is Dec. 5-6 at the Wisconsin-River Falls Invitational in Minneapolis.

Mistry, of West Des Moines, Iowa (Valley High School) posted a pair of wins, taking first in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.00) and 200 breaststroke (2:12.64). He also swam on the 200 medley relay team that finished third in 1:44.11.

Bober, from Greensboro, N.C. (American Hebrew Academy), was in on four victories in the meet. She won individual titles in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.04), 200 breaststroke (2:33.96) and 200 individual medley (2:20.18), plus swam on the first-place 200 medley relay (1:57.64).

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2008-09 campaign on the right foot Saturday with double dual sweeps at the University of Chicago.

The Pioneer women beat Lake Forest College 180-75 and the host school 163-135, while the Pioneer men topped Lake Forest 165-55 and the hosts 149-144.

Fifteen Pioneers overall tasted victory, including eight on the men's side. Four Pioneer men had two wins each - Tom Lankiewicz '12 in the 200 and 500 freestyles (times of 1:50.82 and 5:05.07, respectively), Cyrus Mistry '11 in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes (1:01.00 and 2:12.64), Nick Smith '10 in one- and three-meter diving (scores of 186.75 and 198.50) and Devin St. John '10 in the 100 freestyle (49.57) and 100 butterfly (55.29).

Jon Willuhn '10, Dan Neely '09, Marco Fulgoni '12 and Pat Blachly '09 combined to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.91.

Morgan Bober '12 and Valerie Stimac '09 were each in on four victories for Grinnell's women. Bober had individual wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events (times of 1:10.04 and 2:33.96, respectively) as well as the 200 individual medley (2:20.18), while Stimac was first in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle races (25.66, 55.52 and 2:02.16).

Bober also swam on the winning 200 medley relay with Caitlin Short '12, Andrea Leiser '11 and Casey Strickler (1:57.64), while Stimac was on the first-place 200 freestyle relay with Leiser, Strickler and Jacqueline Anderson '11 (1:45.36). Kelly Bruce '12 won one- and three-meter diving with point totals of 215.10 and 234.45.

Taking second for Grinnell's women were Hannah LaFollette '11 in one- and three-meter diving, plus Strickler in the 100 freestyle.

Pioneer men earning runner-up individual finishes were Nate Wittnam '09 in the 200 butterfly and Michael Schoelz '12 in the 50 freestyle. Wittnam, Schoelz, Neely and Fulgoni combined to finish second in the 200 medley relay, while St. John, Lankiewicz, Schoelz and Tommy Olson '10 were runner-up in the 200 freestyle relay.

Grinnell will compete in a dual at Loras College in Dubuque next Saturday.

The Grinnell College swimming and diving teams open their 2008-09 campaign Saturday with a double dual at the University of Chicago. Lake Forest College will also be at the event, which starts at 2 p.m.

Grinnell begins the season having won a combined 17 Midwest Conference titles in a row, 10 on the women's side and seven from the men.

At the league meet, Grinnell's women piled up 1,303 points to easily beat runner-up Lawrence University, which finished with 766. Meghan McDoniel '10 was named Female Swimmer of the Meet after having a hand in numerous Pioneer victories, including two record-breaking relays. She joined Valerie Stimac '09, Jacqueline Anderson '11 and Morgan Horton '11 to establish a new school and Midwest Conference record in the 800 freestyle event (8:00.07), and teamed up with Anderson, Chloe Moryl '10 and Stimac to set a pool record in the 400 freestyle relay (3:39.29). Stimac also set a school record in the 200 freestyle at the meet with a clocking of 1:57.87.

Other Pioneer relay victories at the meet came in the 200 medley with Alex Peitz '10, McDoniel, Amy Hadow '10 and Moryl; 200 freestyle with Stimac, Laura McElroy '11, Anderson and Moryl; and 400 medley with Peitz, McDoniel, Hadow and Stimac. McDoniel also won the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, as well as the 200 IM, while Stimac was first in the 100 freestyles. Rounding out the list of Grinnell winners were Peitz (200 backstroke), Hadow (100 butterfly), and Moryl (50 freestyle).

On the men's side, the Pioneers had several banner performaces at the MWC meet. Garnet Smith '08 was named Male Diver of the Meet for the second year in a row after winning the one- and three-meter events. Cyrus Mistry '11 broke his own school record and set a conference and pool record en route to winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.16, a time that made him an NCAA provisional qualifier. A day before that, Mistry shattered the school record in the 100 breaststroke in 59.71. Mistry also teamed up with Glenn Clark '10, Nate Wittnam '09 and Sean Warlick '08 to win the 400 medley relay in 3:38.97.

Sean Warlick ’08 took top honors in the men’s 50-yard freestyle time trial in 22.97, while Ross Noecker ’11 was tops in the men’s 200 IM time trial in 2:13.73.

On the women’s side, Amanda Keledjian ’08 was second in the 50 freestyle time trial in 27.04 and fourth in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.27. Amy Hadow ’10 was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.42.

Runner-up for the Grinnell men was Nate Wittnam '09 in the 200 butterfly (2:01.01). The The Pioneers were third in the 400 freestyle relay with Ross Noecker '11, Dan Neely '09, Pat Blachly '09 and Sean Warlick '08 (3:18.88). Fourth place went to Glenn Clark '10 in the 200 backstroke (2:07.27) and Matt Remissong '08 in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.84). Eric Thumma '08 was fifth in the 1650 freestyle (17:29.32), while other fifth places were collected by Mike Weslander '09 in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.22) and Patrick Thomas '10 in the 200 butterfly (2:09.86). Blachly was sixth in the 100 freestyle (50.12).

"It was a challenging meet for us, but our people rose to the challenge," said Grinnell coach Erin Hurley. "It was a great team effort. Our depth was a big key."

The day was highlighted by a new school record and Midwest Conference record by the women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Valerie Stimac '09, Meghan McDoniel '10, Jacqueline Anderson '11 and Morgan Horton '11, who finished in 8:00.07, and a new school record in the men's 100 breaststroke by Cyrus Mistry '11. The Pioneer women have 891 points after the second day, well ahead of second-place Lawrence University's 546. On the men's side, Grinnell has 749 points while Monmouth College has 575.

Individual champs for Grinnell on the women's side Saturday were Stimac in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.87), Amy Hadow '10 in the 100 butterfly (1:00.52) and McDoniel (1:10.94). Garnet Smith '08 won the men's one-meter diving event with 407.60 points. Grinnell's women won the 200 medley relay, as Alex Peitz '10, McDoniel, Hadow and Chloe Moryl '10 swam 1:52.73.

Runners-up for Grinnell were Amanda Keledjian '08 in the women's 400 IM (4:52.69), Matt Remissong '08 in the men's 400 IM (4:29.16), Nate Wittnam in the men's 100 butterfly (53.68), Mistry in the 100 breaststroke (59.71), Peitz in the women's 100 backstroke (1:02.63), Nick Smith '10 in one-meter diving (345.05) and the men's 200 medley relay team of Glenn Clark '10, Mistry, Wittnam and Pat Blachly '09 (1:40.19).

Placing third were Horton in the women's 400 IM (4:52.91), Anderson in the women's 200 freestyle (2:01.75), Andie Schrage '08 in women's three-meter diving (331.65) and the men's 800 freestyle relay team of Wittnam, Ross Noecker '11, Blachly and Sean Warlick '08 (7:17.58). Fourth went to Eric Thumma '08 in the men's 400 IM (4:37.98), Moryl in the women's 100 butterfly (1:05.00), Clark in the men's 100 butterfly (55.22) and 100 backstroke (57.30), Allie Kossoy '08 in the women's 200 freestyle (2:04.35), Andrea Leiser '11 in the women's 100 breaststroke (1:13.53), Anders Ahlberg '09 in the men's 100 breaststroke (1:02.78), Jordan Allison '09 in women's three-meter diving (307.95) and Mark Sullivan '10 in men's one-meter diving (317.75).

Placing fifth for Grinnell were Noecker in the men's 200 freestyle (1:49.38), Lara Meyer '11 in the women's 100 breaststroke (1:14.35) and Alyssa Yokota-Lewis '08 in women's three-meter diving (249.90). Dan Neely '09 was sixth in the men's 100 butterfly (56.63), a similar placing achieved by Blachly in the men's 200 freestyle (1:49.55).

MWC Results

The Pioneers collected two titles on the opening day of competion, including a three-meter diving crown from last year's MWC Diver of the Year, Garnet Smith '08. He tallied 418.05 points. Grinnell was also first in the 400-yard medley relay, as Glenn Clark '10, Cyrus Mistry '11, Nate Wittnam '09 and Sean Warlick '09 combined for a clocking of 3:38.97.

Runners-up for the Pioneers were Sean Warlick '08 in the 200 IM (2:03.83) and Nick Smith '10 in three-meter diving (328.10). Matt Remissong '08 was third in the 200 IM (2:04.04) and Cyrus Mistry '11 was fourth (2:04.26). Also placing fourth was Mark Sullivan '10 in three-meter diving (303.85), as well as the 200 freestyle relay team of Daniel Neely '09, Patrick Blachly '09, Jon Willuhn '09 and Warlick (1:30.85).

The meet continues Saturday and runs through Sunday.
